Understand this estimate
Choose a monthly amount or a time estimate. These use a steady assumed return; reaching a goal is not guaranteed.
Worked example
Starting from 1000 at 0%, a goal of 2200 in 12 months needs 100 each month. Saving 100 each month reaches the same goal in 12 months.
How we calculate this
The assumed return is effective per year. The monthly growth factor is (1 + yearly return / 100) raised to 1/12.
Each month earns growth on its starting balance, then pays any modelled fees, then receives contributions or makes withdrawals at month end.
Projections retain fractional cents internally and round only for display. Displayed rows can differ by a cent when added. Amounts above 10000000000000 are unsupported. Actual returns vary; tax, inflation and product rules are excluded unless explicitly entered.
The deadline mode finds the smallest whole-cent monthly contribution reaching the goal at that deadline. The time mode finds the first qualifying month, up to 600. A goal already met returns month zero in time mode.
An unreachable target or unsupported projection returns an explanation, not an invented time. With negative returns, a goal already met now may require contributions to remain met at a future deadline.
Sources explain the underlying concepts; this calculator uses the conventions described above. It does not recommend a financial product.
